In college, my major was Communication Arts. Basically I did course work in all kinds of communication fields—radio, journalism, speech, semantics, persuasion, literature, etc.—and when I graduated I got a job in a small print shop. "Communication" has long been my calling. I love delving into how people understand things and why it comes across one way and not another. I hate when I get misunderstood or taken wrongly.
One aspect of this that I'm seeing in my world at present is the eerie ability to get inside other people's heads and pull out the images they see there. I'm working on two completely different projects, with two lovely women who are not designers. They both see a very particular feel in their project that they have regimentally verbalized to me. This week I presented both of them with rough sketches of designs for their projects. Their excitement at seeing a somewhat fleshed out version of what is in their heads is very gratifying.
I can't say this happens all the time, but I'm getting much better at it.
